Later That Evening, She Carefully Prepared the Roast. She Placed It in The Oven, Making Sure to Set The Timer So That He Would Hear It (it would wake him) Then Gathered Only Her Purse and Removed From The Bathroom A Photo of The Two of Them That He Had Taken At The Fair, On Their First Date. The Spring Obvious in Her Hair, And A Kind of Painlessness in The Stillness of His Expression, The Sheer Obviousness of The Ease of His Contentment Woven Through The Fabric of The Musclature of His Face and Behind His Eyeglasses, Warping The Basket and Through The Thicket of Metal Spokes, The Colored Rivulets of Faces Feeding Into The Larger Shapeless Mass Backlit and Spreading Out Across The Green Green Grass and Pink Fifties Sugar Hairdo. To Look At It Is To Hear in The Distance The Winning Rings and The Waves of Cheer; The Sound of A Young Teenage Couple Shrieking With Laughter and, Like With All Bouts of Pure Joy, The Desperate Begging For Less; For More. And, Walking Past The Bed As Though It Was Still A Part of A Set In A Department Store, She Left With The Conviction of Someone That’s Remembered Something Forgotten, And Can Spare No Moment More in Putting It Off.
